Hardware

Question:

When replacing a B&C or Kelly starter with a Sky-Tec, why doesn't the alternator strap fit properly between the starter and alternator?

Answer:

As the starter OEM to Lycoming, Sky-Tec holds the location of the threaded hole

in the alternator boss of the starter to a very tight tolerance specified by Lycoming.

Unfortunately, other starter manufacturers don't.

Solution:

Go back to the original OE Lycoming alternator strap (Lycoming PN 74323)

Fits like a glove.

Question:

What bolt should be used to secure an alternator strap to the starter's alternator boss?

Why such an odd (expensive, hard to find...) bolt?

You'll find that all threaded holes in aluminum on aircraft engines are coarse threaded.

Tapped holes in aluminum should never be fine threaded in engine applications (or so we've been told).

Where do I buy it?

This just in from a customer: try

Thank you, David for the tip!

What does it look like?
